Strategic Priority Good Government | |
Description This is for clearing vegetation from the Central of Georgia Historic Railroad Viaduct located on W. Boundary Street and Louisville Road with Savannah Construction and Preservation (LOCAL, DBE) in the amount of $94,605. Canal District Master Plan recommends restoring and activating the historic viaduct located on W. Boundary Street and Louisville Road within the Central of Georgia National Register Historic District. Restoration of the structure will transform this gateway into Greater West Savannah while also providing a multipurpose pedestrian connection between neighborhoods, the Canal District and downtown.
In 2020, the City of Savannah conducted the Central of Georgia Railway Viaduct Assessment to review the existing condition of the viaduct and determine if it can safely support pedestrian and light vehicular loads for a proposed trail. One of the recommendations from the study was to remove all vegetation growth including all growth on the exposed portions of the brick masonry and within ten feet of the structure. In addition, the clearing process should comply with the National Park Service Preservation Brief 1: Cleaning and Water-Repellent Treatments for Historic Masonry Buildings. The City recommends that Savannah Construction and Preservation (LOCAL, DBE) proceed with the clearing the vegetation from the viaduct which will allow a conditions assessment of the structure for future restoration improvements, create a gateway and eliminate blight.
The specific scope of work for the project includes:
The viaduct is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Central of Georgia Railroad Historic District. Due to its historic significance, a vendor has been selected who has experience with the U.S. Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and will also comply with the Coastal Heritage Society’s Vegetation Standards. The bid was advertised, opened, and reviewed. Delivery: As needed. Terms: Net 30 days.
