Title
36. Authorize the Approval of the Installation of a Bronze Plaque at 122 W. Broughton Street in Aldermanic District 2 (25-004882-HM) (Planning & Urban Design Department)
Strategic Priority
GOAL 2: Invest in Equitable Community Development & Resiliency
Description

The applicant, Joan Levy, is requesting to install a 12" x 24" bronze plaque in the brick sidewalk at 122 W. Broughton Street recognizing the location of the former residence of Colonel Mordecai Sheftall.

Colonel Mordecai Sheftall was the highest-ranking Jewish officer in the Continental Forces and was known as "the great rebel" patriot, using his own funds to provide military supplies, clothing and food for the troops of Georgia and South Carolina during the American Revolutionary War. The Sheftall family was a founding member of Congregation Mickve Israel, the oldest congregation in the United States practicing Reform Judaism. Sheftall served in many positions as a civic leader in Savannah including the Inspector of Tanned Leather for the Port of Savannah, Commissary General of Georgia Troops (Continental Army) and Agent of the State of Georgia for Purchasing Clothing. He was a devoted Savannahian and American serving his faith, community and country until his death in 1797.

The plaque will also coincide with the America 250 celebration which commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  As a prominent Savannahian, Colonel Mordecai Sheftall led by faith and example; helping secure the independence of America.

Recommendation

On  November 6, 2025, the Historic Site and Monument Commission recommended approval to the Savannah City for the installation of the commemorative plaque of the Sheftall house located in the vicinity of 122 West Broughton Street, with the following condition because the proposed work otherwise meets the standards within the Master Plan and Guidelines for Markers, Monuments, and Public Art:

1. Provide rendering from sign manufacturer showing the height of the letters on the plaque to ensure they meet the standards.
