September 25, 2025 City Council Regular Meeting
Title
25. Authorize the Approval of the Installation of the East Savannah Neighborhood Historical Markers in Aldermanic District 3 (25-003989-HM) (Municipal Archives)
Strategic Priority
GOAL 2: Invest in Equitable Community Development & Resiliency
Description

The East Savannah Neighborhood Historical Markers project is a series of five interpretive signs that help convey the unique history of the East Savannah Neighborhood. Drawing from oral histories, historical research, and documentation collected for the Eastside Neighborhood Documentation Project by historians Dr. Charles Elmore and Dr. Martha Keber (resulting in an archival collection preserved in the City of Savannah’s Municipal Archives and the 2011 publication Ebb and Flow: Life and Community in Eastern Savannah written by Martha L. Keber and published by the City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs), and further supplemented by community input and engagement hosted by the Historic Savannah Foundation between 2022-2024.

The proposed markers include:

  1. East Savannah Neighborhood at the southeast corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Gwinnett Street;
  2. Savannah Sports Arena at the southside of East Gwinnett Street, just east of the intersection of Wyoming Street;
  3. East Savannah Cemetery at the eastern end of Alaska Street;
  4. First African Baptist Church of East Savannah at the southwest corner of Gabe Street and Treat Avenue; and
  5. Latson Grocery at the southeast corner of Treat Avenue and Gwinnett Street.

Indvidually, and as a collective group, the markers help to tell the unique story of East Savannah's past to future generations and present community members.

Recommendation

On September 4, 2025, the Historic Site and Monument Commission recommended approval to the Savannah City Council for the creation and installation of five interpretive historical markers throughout the East Savannah Neighborhood as requested, to be docketed on a City Council agenda, because the work meets the standards within the Master Plan and Guidelines for Markers, Monuments, and Public Art.
