Title
56. Approval to Rename Magnolia Park, Located at the Corner of Bacon Park Drive and Morgan Street, to Robert "Bobby" Sturgess Park.
Strategic Priority
Neighborhood Revitalization
Description

The applicant is requesting approval to rename Magnolia Park, located at the corner of Bacon Park Drive and Morgan Street, to Robert "Bobby" Sturgess Park. The existing name, Magnolia Park, seems to be a reference to the neighborhood name and no official action regarding an official naming has been located in the historical record. Robert "Bobby" Sturgess (September 11, 1954-February 11, 2021) was a native Savannahian and a prominent figure within the local community, including as proprietor of the successful Holland House Restaurant. He was a well-known member of the neighborhood in which the park is located, and was always quick to offer a helping hand with home repairs to his neighbors (File No. 24-003715-HM).

Recommendation

The Historic Site and Monument Commission does hereby recommend approval to the Savannah City Council for the application to rename Magnolia Park (corner of Bacon Park Drive and Morgan Street) to Robert "Bobby" Sturgess Park as requested because the project meets the standards within Article E - Naming and Renaming Public Property, Facilities and Streets.
