Description

The Petitioner is requesting the approval of the installation of a Blue Star Marker and the installation of a Gold Star Memorial Marker at 10875 Abercorn Street. Both markers are a part of a national campaign from the National Council of Garden Clubs and will be placed with in the Veterans Memorial Park. Both markers pay tribute to service members of all U.S. wars, acknowledging their contributions to the nation and our community.

In 1945, the National Council of Garden Clubs began their Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker Program and as part of their celebrations of America 250 are working to ensure the markers are represented in every state. The Blue Star Marker Program honors service members from every branch of the military and is based on the blue star icon used in World War II. The Gold Star Memorial Marker Program began in 2015 by the National Council of Garden Clubs to specifically recognize and honor the families of fallen service members.

The markers would be located within the Veterans Memorial Park, flanking each side of the existing flagpole and follow the national design standard. The Park is open to the public and serves as a memorial to all veterans of Savannah and Chatham County.

Recommendation

On September 3, 2026, the Historic Sites and Monuments Commission recommended that the City Council approve the request to install the two markers inside Veterans Memorial Park located at 10875 Abercorn Street, as the proposed installation aligns with the Master Plan and Guidelines for Markers, Monuments and Public Art.
