Title
5. A Proclamation Recognizing November as National Runaway Prevention Month and November 16th through November 24th as National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
Strategic Priority
Good Government
Description

November is National Runaway Prevention Month (NRPM), a public awareness campaign designed to “Shine a Light” on the experiences of runaway and homeless youth that too often remain invisible. It is also an opportunity to spotlight the resources available to support youth in crisis throughout the nation. As part of the campaign, individuals, organizations and communities across the nation are encouraged to work together to prevent youth homelessness.

National Runaway Prevention Month is spearheaded each year by the National Runaway Safeline (NRS), a national nonprofit organization committed to ensuring that runaway, homeless and at-risk youth are safe and off the streets, with the support of the Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB). Locally, resources are coordinated by the Savannah/Chatham County Continuum of Care.  Service Providers present today include:

  • Julie Wade, Park Place Outreach
  • Patricia Youngquist, Union Mission
  • Katrina Bostick, Family Promise of Greater Savannah
  • Yvonne Prior, Inner City Night Shelter
  • Gina Taylor, Greenbriar Children's Center
  • Ariana Berksteiner, Emmaus House
  • Cindy Kelly, Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless
  • Kevin Veitinger, Community of St. Joseph

In addition, as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, most people take time to consider what they’re thankful for and donate some of their time, attention and resources to others. In the spirit of thankfulness and giving, each year the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness designate the week prior to Thanksgiving (November 16th - 24th) to sponsor the National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
