Description

The Historic Site and Monument Commission recommends approval of the request of the petitioner, The Savannah Town Committee of The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, to reinstall a historical maker to John Wesley at 27 Abercorn Street in front of the Sturgis House. The granite marker was previously located here and is being reinstalled with a new plaque, the previous plaque having been stolen prior to the marker's removal. The petitioner is funding the marker.

The following text is proposed for the new plaque:

John Wesley

Founder of Methodism

Minister of the Church of England

in Georgia 1736-1737 [staff requests "in" be capitalized]

Lived and prayed at the parsonage

And garden at this site

The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America

In the State of Georgia

Installed 1903 Replaced 2018

The Historic Site and Monument Commission recommends City Council approve the petitioner's request with the following conditions to be provided for staff approval:

  1. A final rendering of the new plaque and text is provided;
  2. The plaque material is provided and is a durable material such as bronze;
  3. The text is revised as requested;
  4. The applicant provides an escrow payment
