Description

The Petitioner is requesting approval for the installation of a Daughters of the Amercian Revolution (DAR) America 250! bronze marker. The marker commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War and will be placed near the Spring Hill Redoubt on Battlefield Memorial Park. The marker commemorates the American Patriots and their allies of the American Revolutionary War connecting these Patriots with the Siege of Savannah, which took place near the proposed installation site on October 9, 1779. The Siege of Savannah is noted for its diverse representation of individuals that participated in the battle to establish American Independence. The marker will encourage readers to contemplate the lives of all individuals who participated in the Siege of Savannah while also bringing greater awareness to the diversity of the individuals who participated in the battle. The marker is part of a nation-wide initiative led by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution to commemorate the soldiers that supported the American Revolution. The DAR hopes to create a coast-to-coast network of markers that will become sources of pride for local communities and will serve as reminders of the conviction, courage and cooperation that was required to establish the America.

The marker will be located on the west side of the Battlefield Memorial Park within the Tricentennial Park, along Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard near a granite bench that was previously donated by the Sons of the American Revolution. The park is open to the public and is maintained by the Coastal Georgia Heritage Society. The park is a memorial that honors more than 800 people who were killed or injured in one of the bloodiest battles of the American Revolution.
