June 11, 2026 City Council Regular Meeting
Title
18. Approval of a Resolution to Adopt the Public Art Master Plan (Cultural Resources)
Strategic Priority
GOAL 2: Invest in Equitable Community Development & Resiliency
Description

Recommend approval of a resolution adopting the Public Art Master Plan, developed in collaboration with the community through outreach efforts including stakeholder meetings, virtual focus groups, citywide surveys, and in-person community workshops hosted in each aldermanic district.

The Plan provides a roadmap for developing public art throughout the city, offering a diverse menu of public art types and strategies for implementing the community’s desires regarding what public art should express, celebrate and honor.  It includes project ideas, suggested locations, and curatorial guidance for installation of public art.  Finally, and most importantly, it places residents as the central decision-makers for the types of art they most want to see represent themselves and their neighborhoods.

Public art enhances quality of life and the environment by adding color, creativity and beauty to everyday public spaces, like parks, bus stops, street intersections and overpasses.  Public art can embrace and showcase a community’s identity and pride and help to connect residents to each other and to the broader city and world.   Public art can be cheerful, playful, and also powerfully convey meaning, storytelling, remembrance, critical thinking and discussion.

Since Savannah was established nearly three centuries ago, beauty, livability and creating a thriving community have always been at the center of Savannah’s identity and growth.  With the adoption of the Public Art Master Plan, the City will continue this legacy.
