Description

With grateful appreciation, the City of Savannah acknowledges the generous donation of Georgia Power to the City Hall Interior Restoration Project, specifically $40,000 to restore the lighting of the interior stained-glass dome. This donation supplements an earlier $50,000 donation made by Georgia Power in 2024 which supported the restoration of the original, historic brass lighting fixtures in the Council Chamber and four-story rotunda. The enhanced lighting of the stained-glass dome highlights the beautiful colors of this original architectural feature, including golds, ambers, blues, greens, and pinks. The original artificial lighting system installed when the building opened in 1906 had failed over the building’s 120-year life-span, and this restoration brings this feature back to its original lighted beauty. Georgia Power’s support of this project has been instrumental in moving it forward and recognizes the historic role of its predecessor Savannah Electric and Power Company’s role in the building’s opening back in 1906 when the City of Savannah first embraced electricity in the new City Hall.
