Description

This contract is with SamJay Services, Inc. for Springfield Terrace remediation and cleanup in the amount of $78,100.

Springfield Terrace School was built in 1926 at 707 Hastings Street.  The one-story, wood-frame reflects Craftsman and Colonial Revival architectural styles and retains a high degree of integrity, including its original floor plan, plaster walls, wood details, and historic finishes.  Springfield Terrace School is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (2022).

The Springfield Terrace School experienced extensive damage during the ice and snow events that occurred this past winter, causing roof failure and water infiltration. The building has collapsed ceilings and large areas of roofing loss, which have left debris from structural and finish failures in every room in the building. Extensive termite damage is also evident. The debris is contaminated with asbestos and lead and must be removed prior to the building assessment, which is the first step to begin design for the building’s rehabilitation.

The design team has indicated the clean-out that needs to occur before beginning design. Due to the asbestos and lead contamination, a specialty contractor must be utilized to properly dispose of the contaminated debris. Making repairs to this historic structure aligns with the City’s commitment to preserving Savannah’s historic heritage.

The City of Savannah will be utilizing a piggybacking arrangement with Chatham County to use their existing contract with SamJay.  Chatham County’s contract with SamJay expires on October 6, 2025.
