5. A Proclamation Recognizing the 20th Anniversary of Terrorist Attacks on the United States of America on September 11, 2001, and the Men and Women who Lost Their Lives and Those who Fought to Protect Us Since That Day

Description

WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, the American people endured the worst terrorist attack in world history as 4 coordinated attacks occurred on U.S. soil; and

 

WHEREAS, on that fateful day, 2,996 people died including 340 firefighters, 72 law enforcement officers, 55 military and those representing over 90 countries. Over 6,000 people were injured and many more suffered and are still suffering from trauma and after-effects of that awful day; and

.

WHEREAS, September 11, later federally designated as Patriot Day, commemorates the lives of those who perished on September 11, 2001, encourages our prayers for the families who carry on their legacies, and honors the unmatched bravery of our Nation’s first responders. It also commends those who continue to answer the call to serve our country and risk their lives in defense of freedom; and

 

WHEREAS, on this somber milestone anniversary, I urge Savannahians to give meaning to the phrase “Never Forget,” to mourn for those we lost and continue to support those who rushed toward danger that day.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Van R. Johnson, II, Mayor, City of Savannah, GA, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2021 as

 

“THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 (PATRIOT DAY)”

 

in Savannah and encourage citizens to intentionally honor the lives of those lost by community service, random acts of kindness and remembrance ceremonies on this day and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. to hoor the victims who perished because of these evil attacks. I further call upon the houses of faith in the Savannah area to ring their bells 20 times beginning at 8:46 am.
