Description RESOLUTION REMOVING “JOHN C. CALHOUN” FROM THE PUBLIC SQUARE SITUATED AT ABERCORN AND EAST WAYNE STREETS
WHEREAS, in 1851 the public square situated at Abercorn and East Wayne Streets was named Calhoun Square in honor of South Carolina statesman and former Vice President of the United States John C. Calhoun; and WHEREAS, Calhoun was known to have supported the institution of slavery; and WHEREAS, Calhoun had no known ties to the City of Savannah, Georgia; and WHEREAS, at the October 26, 2022 meeting of the City Council, the Mayor and Alderman received extensive feedback from members of the community regarding officially removing Calhoun’s name from said square; and WHEREAS, certain residents of properties adjacent to Calhoun Square have petitioned City Council to officially remove Calhoun’s name from the square; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and Aldermen support official removal of Calhoun’s name from the square situated at Abercorn and East Wayne Streets. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the public square situated at Abercorn and East Wayne Streets shall no longer be known as Calhoun Square; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Manager is hereby directed to take all steps necessary to effectuate this Resolution. | |
