Title
25. Street Renaming for Essex Avenue Between 2nd Street and Corvair Street to "Annie B. Graham Street" in Aldermanic District 1 (File No. 25-001257-HM)
Strategic Priority
Good Government
Description

This request is for an honorary street renaming of a portion of Essex Avenue between 2nd Street and Corvair Street to “Annie B. Graham Street".  The street is located in the Tremont Park Neighborhood.

Ms. Annie Bell Graham was one of the first African American property owners in Tremont Park, while living in the community she served as the "Mother of the Church" for the Tremont Park Missionary Baptist Church for 60 years. Ms. Graham was a dedicated community member and organizer, who worked to help purchase the land and build the Tremont Park Community Center. She was an active participant in community events at the Center and served as a leader by example to all members of the community. Ms. Graham was commonly referred to by community members as "Grandma" because she provided hot meals, clothing, and support both spiritually and through childcare, always offering to watch the children of the neighborhood free of charge while parents went to work. The number of lives she impacted cannot be counted and she will forever be known as the "Matriarch of Tremont Park".

Recommendation

On April 3, 2025, the Historic Sites and Monuments Commission recommended approval of renaming Essex Avenue between 2nd Street and Corvair Street to “Annie B. Graham Street".
