Description
On September 27, 2018, the City of Savannah and Historic Savannah Foundation signed a Memorandum of Agreement and a Conservation Easement as part of a partnership that led to the restoration and repurposing of a 19th century two-story structure at 419 W. 34th Street. The dilapidated structure was considered the most historically significant building on the site purchased by the City for construction of Savannah Police Department's Central Precinct.
As part of the agreement, the building was saved and incorporated into the Precinct site plan, and the City and Historic Savannah collaborated on its rehabilitation in keeping with the historic and architectural character of the building. The building was renovated into a duplex apartment, which is being rented to Central Precinct officers at a reduced rate in exchange for undertaking certain caretaker duties with the Precinct facility.
Under the Agreement, the Historic Savannah Foundation agreed to help oversee the renovations, and commit $50,000 toward the project, which was to be used to develop architectural plans, with the balance of the funds to be placed in escrow for building exterior maintenance.
Under this new Escrow Agreement, Historic Savannah will place $19,540.81 into escrow for that purpose, which includes painting; roof, siding, and window repair; and structural issues. Use of the funds must be in keeping with the provisions of the Conservation Easement to maintain the historic integrity of the structure.
