Title 26. Approval of the Petition to Rename Yamacraw Art Park to Yamacraw Square.
Strategic Priority Neighborhood Revitalization
Description This is a petition request to rename Yamacraw Art Park to Yamacraw Square. Yamacraw Art Park is located between West Bay Street to the north, Ann Street to the east, West Bryan Street to the south, and Fahm Street to the west. This petition has been recommended for approval by the MPC's Historic Sites and Monuments Commission and has met all the requirements of Article E: Naming and Renaming of Public Property, Facilities and Streets. This petition has been submitted by the City of Savannah but was requested by the community with overwhelming support during a capital restoration of elements of the park. Many members of the First Bryan Baptist Church have assisted in leading this petition request and have gained dozens of supporting signatures to move the initiative forward. The purpose of the name change is that the space was originally envisioned to function in the same capacity as any of our other historic Squares (a community gathering space for adjacent residents, central public greenspace, memorial for people and events) and as such the feeling is that this space should be given the same consideration when selecting a name.
