Description
The new Zoning Ordinance and Georgia Historic Preservation Act requires that the City establish the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) as a new review authority for all local historic districts, properties in the city and conservation districts. This currectly impacts the Victorian, Cuyler-Brownville and Streetcar historic districts as well as the Ardsely Park-Chatham Crescent, Ardmore-Chatham Terrace and Daffin Park-Parkside conservation districts. It will not include the Savannah Downtown Historic District which uses the Savannah Downtown Historic District Board of Review as their review authority.
After approving the new Zoning Ordinance in June 2019, the Historic Preservation Commission was advertised and applications accepted through the Clerk of Council’s Office. Due to the importance of this new authority, it was determined by the previous City Council that the newly elected Mayor and Aldermen would make appointments to the HPC.
In the event that appointments are not made by February 29, 2020--which is the date the new Zoning Ordinance will go into effect--the approval of the proposed text amendment will provide a review authority until the new HPC has been established.
