Description
2020 will mark the 161st anniversary of one of Savannah’s darkest moments. “The Weeping Time,” observed every year from March 2-3, marks the anniversary of the sale of 429 people in 1859 in Savannah — the largest recorded sale of enslaved people in U.S. history. It's known as "The Weeping Time," in part because it rained non-stop for the two-day sale of more than 400 men, women and children. They were auctioned off to pay a debt by the owner of the Butler plantations near Darien.
