Whereas: Ernestine J. Jones, an educator and community activist, was born in Savannah, Georgia, on December 21, 1933, to William Ernest, Sr. and Rebecca Singleton Jenkins. She graduated in 1952 from Woodville High School and earned her B.S. Degree from Savannah State College in Social Studies and English. She furthered her education at Armstrong State College, the University of South Carolina and the Citadel; and

Whereas: Ernestine was employed by the Beaufort County School system, retiring in 1995 after 31 years of service, during which she received numerous awards, including Master Teacher (1978-1980, 1985), Rotary Club Award (1989), and Teacher of the Year (1992); and

Whereas: She was a member of the Woodville-Tompkins Alumni Association, the Board of Elections of Chatham County, an NAACP Life Member, and President of the Liberty City–Richfield-Southover Community Improvement Association, Inc. for 14 years. In 2017, she was inducted into the Woodville-Tompkins High School Hall of Fame for basketball; and

Whereas: Ernestine worked for the betterment of her community, and saw many improvements as a result of her direct involvement. She was the recipient of numerous recognitions presented by social and community organizations, but was most proud to receive the W. W. Law Legacy Award in 2010; and

Whereas: Ernestine as a member of the historic Second African Baptist Church, where she participated in various ministries, including the Education Commission and Senior Saints Ministry; and

Whereas: On January 29, 1956, Ernestine married Clifton Jones, Jr. Their marriage lasted over 62 years and produced four children, Edwin, Daryl, Glynda and Karen; and

Whereas: On July 6, 2018, Ernestine J. Jones passed away, leaving a lasting legacy in Savannah through her family, friends, colleagues and students; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Savannah celebrate the life of Ernestine J. Jones and offer our appreciation for her service to the Savannah community.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Ernestine Jones will be sadly missed by all of us who knew her as a notable member of the Savannah community; and that a copy of this resolution will be delivered to her family and made a part of the permanent records of the Savannah City Council meeting minutes of July 19, 2018.
