Recommend approval of Contract Modification No. 1 for repairs to the wall west of Abercorn Ramp with Savannah Construction and Preservation in the amount of $10,661.00.

The original contract with Savannah Construction and Preservation was for repairs to a section of a wall along Factors Walk, west of the Abercorn Ramp.  The work included structural repairs to a portion of the wall, repair and replacement of brick, repair and replacement of stones, mortar repointing, and crack repair. The project meets the standards of the Historic District Section (8-3030) of the City of Savannah Zoning Ordinance; the National Park Service preservation for Brief 2: Repointing of mortar joints in Historic Masonry Buildings; and the standards of the current edition of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Rehabilitation published by the U.S. Department of Interior.

This contract modification is a summary change order for an additional stair tread to replace the top stair tread that could not be repaired properly with mortar. Additionally, stamped concrete was needed to reestablish the walkway where the old wall protruded.  Finally, upon opening up the wall section, a large tree root was discovered, which was in conflict with the new concrete column and needed to be removed. 

The original contract was approved by Council on August 3, 2017 in the amount of $213,255.00.  The total contract amount to date including this modification is $223,916.00.
