Description
Mr. Kaspar, a former SCMPD officer, suffered a severe cardiac event- and related anoxic issues- on January 1, 2013 while chasing a suspect. In 2018, he applied for a catastrophic designation. Subject to the approval of the Mayor and Aldermen, the parties have agreed to resolve this case for $560,194, broken down as follows: $220,000 on the income benefits component; Medicare Set-Aside seed money of $113,198; and the funding of an annuity to cover future medical expenses in the amount of $225,996. The City’s remaining self-insured retention is $308,027 so the remainder of the settlement will be funded by the City’s excess carrier, Safety National. The MSA will revert back to the City/Safety National upon Mr. Kaspar’s passing.
