Strategic Priority
Infrastructure
Description

Recommend approval of a purchase in the amount of $230,000 with Xylem and Associates for the replacement of ultraviolet water disinfection equipment (includes lamps, sleeves, wiper equipment and UV sensors to replace existing modules, and the refurbishment of junction boxes and ballast cabinets).

The existing equipment has been used since 2007 and is in urgent need of replacement as it is critical to the wastewater disinfection process. Refurbishing the existing equipment individually would cost $244,000 and would leave us without full water treatment during this time.  The ultraviolet disinfection (UV) equipment is used by Water Reclamation Division as a primary mechanism for the destruction of pathogenic organisms to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases to the environment and downstream users. The effectiveness of the ultraviolet (UV) equipment depends solely on the intensity of the ultraviolet radiation. The lamps are enclosed and safe in quartz sleeves and submerged according to water flow. The lamps are attached to a stainless steel frame which houses all the wiring. This is an environmentally-friendly and safe upgrade that is needed to keep in compliance with State regulations.

These parts and services are a sole source because the existing equipment is Xylem Wedeco UV equipment. Xylem and Associates is our area representative for the Xylem Wedeco brand UV systems.
