Description

This is the second of two petitions for the property located at 505 West 36th Street. The petitioner is requesting to rezone the property at 505 West 36th Street from Traditional Residential-1 (TR-1) to Traditional Commercial-1 (TC-1) in association with a proposed use as a museum. The property, 0.11 acres, will be restored as an African American historic and cultural arts museum in the main house with a renovated carriage house that will contain an apartment.

 

Note, since the petition was submitted, the property was transferred from the Historic Savannah Foundation to Galvan Initiatives Foundation. The new owner is currently moving forward with plans for the museum and carriage house.

Recommendation

November 7, 2023, the Planning Commission recommended approval to rezone 505 West 36th Street from TR-1 (Traditional Residential-1) to TC-1 (Traditional Commericial-1) under these conditions:

 

  1. The historic Kiah House shall be preserved.
  2. The only TC-1 allowed uses shall be museum and apartment.
