December 5, 2019 City Council Regular Meeting
Title
20. Motion to Adopt a Resolution Permitting Atlanta Gas Light to Use a Portion of the City's 50-foot Utility Easement Under the Savannah River for a New Natural Gas Line to Hutchinson Island.
Strategic Priority
Infrastructure
Description

In order for the development of parts of Hutchinson Island to include the Trade Center and Westin Hotel it was necessary for the City and County to secure a means to provide public utility to the island which had none. In 1998, the City and County in collaboration with U.S. Corps of Engineers and State Properties Commission were able to procure a 50-foot underground utility easement across Savannah River to Hutchinson Island. Atlanta Gas Light previously had a natural gas line within the easement which was not longer functional and needed repair.

Atlanta Gas Light received emergency permission from the State Properties Commission to install a new gas line within the easement. The gas line has been installed and Atlanta Gas Light is following through with the state requirements after the emergency installation. One of these requirements is to request permission from the City of Savannah.

The State Properties Commission requires confirmation from the City of Savannah concerning the allowance of Atlanta Gas Light to place a gas line in the 50-foot utility easement. The upgraded gas line will be of assistance to the Georgia Ports Authority in future port development and economic development on Hutchinson Island.
