Title
21. Motion to Approve a Resolution Accepting a $5,000 Donation from the Georgia Police K9 Foundation
Strategic Priority
Public Safety
Description

This resolution allows the Savannah Police Department Canine Unit to outfit, and put into service, a vehicle that was acquired through an interdepartmental transfer.  These K9 units require specialized equipment that includes: a kennel, storage, and an automated emergency notification system in the event of a vehicle malfunction.  The Georgia Police K9 Foundation, an all-volunteer 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to assist active and retired law enforcement K9s in the State of Georgia, has donated $5,000 to help offset the costs associated with the procurement and installation of this equipment.

The Georgia Police K9 Foundation's mission is "to assist active and retired law enforcement K9s in the State of Georgia."  One of the key objectives of the foundation is to provide education to the general public about the importance of K9s and what they do for our communities.

K9s assist communities by detecting illegal narcotics, or by engaging dangerous situations with some of the most violent offenders.  In addition to their law enforcement duties, K9s assist citizens by locating a missing child or elderly person.  Savannah Police's dual purpose patrol dogs are certified in both patrol work and narcotics detection.
