December 19, 2019 City Council Regular Meeting
Title
77. Motion to Approve the Archaeology Resource Protection Ordinance
Strategic Priority
Neighborhood Revitalization
Description

Since the early 1970s, the City has developed and approved ordinances to protect the National Historic Landmark District, as well as other locally designated historic districts. Yet, one feature not included in any of these regulations is an archaeology ordinance.

The City recently hosted two public meetings (September 26 and October 24, 2019) and conducted a survey to gage the interest in creating an archaeology ordinance. Based on feedback received, it was determined that the City will move forward with an archaeology resource protection ordinance for public projects requiring the City to conduct an archaeological assessment on land disturbance projects that create a footprint of more than 1,500 square feet. The ordinance will not apply to private property.

Following the adoption of the ordinance, the City will facilitate further discussion with an archaeology task force to determine additional steps that need to be taken to strengthen the ordinance and provide additional opportunities to highlight this important facet of our history. It is anticipated this process will take an additional twelve to eighteen months.

Through the passage of the Archaeology Resource Protection Ordinance, the community will be better able to recognize our archaeological resources as well as understand and celebrate our community’s unique and diverse history.
