August 31, 2017 City Council Regular Meeting
Title
Motion to Approve Memorandum of Understanding with the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia on Behalf of the Digital Library of Georgia for Digitization Services and Online Access of Historical Maps
Description

The Digital Library of Georgia (DLG), a unit of the Main Library of the University of Georgia, has awarded the City of Savannah Research Library & Municipal Archives a 2017 Digitization Subgrant to digitize 461 items from the City's historical map collections in order to make them accessible to the public through the DLG and the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) portals.

This Memorandum of Understanding, executed by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia on behalf of the University of Georgia, outlines the responsibilities of both the DLG and the City Library & Archives to complete the digitization project and constitutes acceptance of the digitization services grant. Digitization and online accessibility of these maps will increase public access to the City's historical assets and minimize unnecessary handling of the originals, thereby preserving them for future generations. Inclusion in the DLG (a state-wide portal) and DPLA (a national portal) will raise awareness of the City's history and archival collections.

The financial impact of accepting the grant award and executing the MOU is estimated at $150.00, the cost of hand-delivering the maps to DLG in Athens, Georgia, for digitization and picking them after digitization is complete.  These travel expenses will be paid for out of the Library & Archives' regular operating budget.
